The following is submitted by Family.

Born 14/08/1921, in Walton, Ontario. the son of Rev. John and Ida (nee Marshall) Button of Charing Cross. As his father was a minister, the family moved from Walton to Florence, Putnam, and Fordwich, where his mother Ida died.  His father married Bertha Lynn (nee Pike) in 1935, and the family moved to Charing Cross where his father was the Minister from 1937 to 1945 at the Charing Cross United Church. He was brother of Thelma, Helen, Ida May, Ross, Dr. James, and Doris. Harvey attended Chatham Vocational School.  After war he returned to Charing Cross where he married Evelyn (nee Russell) July 17, 1946.  They had four children, John Charles (died shortly after birth), Janet, Bonnie, and Lois. 

Enlistment Date and Place: June 29, 1942, Windsor, Ontario

Date and Place of Discharge: September 17, 1945, Toronto, Ontario

Theatre of War Service: England, Northern Ireland, Freetown in Sierra Leone, West Africa

Reported to have been serving in Africa and was welcomed back to Charing Cross, Raleigh Twsp., Kent Co. CDN 6/09/45. 

Medals, Decoration, Awards: Canadian Volunteer Service Medal (two), Defence Medal, War Medal (previously listed as General Service Medal on a document listing awards)

Military Training: Harvey was trained as a radar mechanic and attained “A” Grouping.  He received training in Clinton, Ottawa, Toronto, and Corpus Christie, Texas.

Prominent Battle(s) Experience: Harvey was shipped overseas in March 1943.  As a radar technician it was his job to guide pilots to a safe landing and boats crossing the Atlantic Ocean. 

Harvey worked at Bell Canada until his retirement in 1979. He died December 23, 2001, and was buried at Pardoville Union Cemetery.
