Appears on the “Muster Roll” of the 2nd Bn., Kent Regiment, (MG), N.P.A.N. (date unknown). The CDN 25/09/44(P) reported that AB. RCNVR unexpectedly turned up at his parents back door. His parents Detective and Mrs. Jack Harrington of 73 West St., Chatham had not received any notice that their son was on his way home until the knock on the back door and James was welcomed home by his father.
After transferring from the Army to the Navy, James left for overseas 16 December 1943. For the last month he had been engaged in combined operations in the Normandy invasion area. For the thee weeks after the invasion he was under shell fire. His family had become worried about his well being since there had been no correspondence.
He was granted a leave until 28 October when he would return to the east coast for further orders. James told his family that he was well fed and treated on active service
