Born in England in 1889, the husband of Louise they were living at 52 St. George St., Chatham with their sons William H. (B16335) Jr., and George (A22808). A veteran of the Great War.

It was reported in the CDN 18/07/44 that William who was attached to No. 8 Company of the VGC had returned from a eighty four day voyage. He left Canada in March of 1944 bound for India with a consignment of mules. While passing through the Mediteranian their convoy was attacked by German aircraft and U-Boats. Two ammunition ships, “went down in flames”. George said a young English gunner shot down one of the German planes, he had no idea if any of the U-Boats were sunk.

They passed through the Suez Canal to the to the Indian Ocean across that to Bombay where they unloaded the mules and spent ten days there, four days in Karachi, one day in Aden and then sailed to Australia arriving in Melbourne where they spent a dad before departing for Canada.

“Harper was impressed by the hatred of the Indian populace had for the Japanese. So deep, in fact, was the bitterness that Bombay merchants with stores overloaded with pre-war Japanese good they refused to sell at any price. “ CDN 18/07/44.

William also served at various POW camps throughout Canada during the war. He was discharged from the Army 25/10/1945.
