Unit # Pararchute Bn

Prior to enlisting Tex had a reputation as an athlete, boxing, swimming earned him the nickname “Muscle Builder”. He joined the army in 1940 and was on instructional duties before joining the paratroopers. His brother Bill also joined the army, his other brother Tom was still at home.

Tex was one of three black enlistments training at the Parachute Training Centre at Shilo, MN., (Pte. Loyst William Kelly and Pte. Charles Waterman) were also serving in the first detachment.

According to an article in the CDN (date unknown but copied) Loyst and Tex “are among the most highly regarded fighting men  in the army’s most keenly trained unit.”
