Hanley, John Robson

 

The son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Hanley, Cross St., Chatham, ON. He would marry Pamala (nee Tillford) of Bexhill-on-the-sea, England, Sussex ceremony took place at “The Little Common Church” England CDN 15/12/45(P).   They had a daughter born in 1948. CDN 25/03/48  Prior to his enlistment he was employed at the Canadian Leaf Tobacco Co., in Chatham.

Previous Military Experience: Trained with the Kent Regiment Militia.

History After Enlistment:

In June 29, 1940, Hanley was promoted from Army Corporal to Sergeant INF. (MG), then in August 4, 1940, Hanley was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, while on March 7, 1941 Hanley was promoted to Lieutenant INF. (R).  He joined the 60th RECCS and was sent overseas to England.

Jack was reported on a weekend furlough in April of 1942 before rejoining the Kent Regt., “on the coast”. CDN 6/04/42 

The CDN 14/09/42 reported that Captain Jack Hanley had left the First Kent Regt and was then with the 30th Reconnaissance Battalion (Essex). He had been on a furlough to visit his family on Cross St., Chatham. Jack was home again in August, 1942 at the family home on Cross St. CDN 22/08/42.

Jack was promoted to the rank of Captain in November of 1942. He had transferred back to the infantry and was sent to the Irish Regt. of Canada as a reinforcement officer then in Italy.  He saw action with that officer and then was transferred to the staff. He was serving in Italy in October of 1944. CDN 19/10/44.   He was transferred to the Irish Regiment and was shipped to Italy in 1944, near the “River Poe”.   CDN 19/10/44.   He was sent to Holland, and served at Bridge Headquarters.

The CDN 14/09/42 reported that Captain Jack Hanley had left the First Kent Regt and was then with the 30th Reconnaissance Battalion (Essex). He had been on a furlough to visit his family on Cross St., Chatham.  Capt. Hanley along with Capt. Angus went overseas together in September of 1943. 

The CDN 15/12/45(P) reported that Captain Hanley had rejoined the 5th Division serving in Germany when the war closed.

It was reported in the CDN 3/03/45 that Capt. Hanley had been promoted to a “position on the Brigade staff of the Canadian Corp in Italy. The CDN 15/12/45(P) reported that Captain Hanley was with the 5th Canadian Armoured Division stationed in England.

The CDN 15/12/45 reported that Capt. Hanley, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Hanley of Cross St., Chatham had married Miss Pamela Tillard of  Bexhill-on-the-sea, Sussex, England. The wedding was held at the “Little Common Church”.   He was expecting to be returning home soon. Mrs Hanley “may be unable to to get to Canada before the spring.

Major Hanley was reported returned from overseas duty in January of 1946. CDN 11/01/46.

Hanley came home to Canada, January 1946.

Major Hanley passed away in December of 1985 at the age of 68 years. CDN 23/12/85 & 27/12/85.

Remained with the Kent Regiment until July 22nd 1943. Went overseas with the 30th Recce Regiment, and served in England, Holland, Italy, France and Belgium. Promoted to the rank of Captain and was appointed to a position on a brigade staff of the Canadian Corps in Italy. Was awarded the Italian, France and German star. The defence medal of England and the C. V. S. Medal and clasp.

Major Hanley passed away in December of 1985 at the age of 68 years. CDN 23/12/85 & 27/12/85.
