Born 4 June 1896 in Chatham, ON. The son of William Arthur Hadley of 154 Thames St., and Kent Manor Apartment also in Chatham, ON. Lieut Col. (2nd Lieut. In the RAF/RCAF in the Great War 2365599). His mother was residing at the Kent Manor Apartments in December of 1942.
Charles S. Hadley enlisted in the Corps of the Guides, December 11th, 1914. Qualified as Infantry Lieutenant October 14th, 1915, and as Infantry Captain December 10th, 1915, at the London School of Instruction.
Charles S. Hadley enlisted as Private at Toronto October 26th, 1917. He was appointed Second Lieutenant in the Imperial Royal Flying Corps as Equipment Officer January 11th, 1918. He proceeded overseas with that unit and transferred to R.A.F. April 1918 and served with force in the rank of Lieut. till he was discharged in England. He left France December 15th,1918 and went to Hospital in Brighton till January 1919, when he was transferred to Orpington till July 14th when he left for Canada.
Discharged October 28th 1919 due to demobilization.
Charles joined the 2nd Kent Regiment in July of 1940 as Captain Quartermaster and Officer Commanding HQ. Company, from August 1940 until February 1941. He was selected for the position of Quartermaster, with the rank of Captain. He remained on the Kent Regiment Administration and Training Staff under Lt. Col. W.G.Thompson from August 1940 to February 1941.
Charles went to England as a reinforcement officer where he was rapidly promoted to the rank of Major and then Lieut. Colonel in December of 1942. The CDN 26/09/44 reported that Liet. – Colonel was promoted to Officer in Command of reinforcement Unit in Britain. As commanding officer of Brigade Reinforcements in Great Britain, he would have seen many Chatham and Kent enlistments pass through his command. He was serving with the First Division of Infantry in England.
