Originally from London, ON., Alex along with his two brothers came to Chatham to enlist with the 1st Kent Regt. who were recruiting in Chatham. The Greentree boys were billeted in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert King of 145 Cornhill St., Chatham. The boys began to refer to the King’s as their adopted parents, Alex even referring to them as “father and mother”.
Alex went overseas and in 1944 in time to participate in the D-Day invasion. Correspondence was maintained between Alex and the Kings the first Christmas box reached him in Italy where he had been in action for two years and six months. It was reported that Alex had sent Mrs. King a silver letter knife he had “picked up in Florence”. Mrs. King had also received five handkerchiefs from Alex while he was in Africa.
