Private Edward Greenshields received a promotion to Corporal shortly after enlistment , and after courses in B.F. and P.T. and Musketry was given the rank of Sergeant at Camp Borden. January 3rd, 1917, he was sent to London where he passed the required the examination and received the certificate as qualified Sergeant. He went overseas with the 186th Battalion March 26th, 1917, reverting in England to Lance Corporal and Private to go to France, where he proceeded August 23rd, 1917.
He went through but engagement when he was returned to England, due to illness, October 12th, and after convalescence, continued training December 25th, 1917, at Bramshott Camp. In the spring he was transferred to Whitley Camp, was given a course at Bex-hill and also a gas course in which he passed first class and was promoted to Corporal. As a qualified instructor he served in England.
