Lieutenant J. Gordon Gillanders commenced his training in the R.A.F. at Camp Mohawk, Deseronto in May 1917, later serving as Instructor at Camp Borden. He went overseas in November 1917, continuing his training in England and Scotland, and proceeded to France March 1st, 1918. August 13th, 1918, he was promoted to the rank of Captain, and shortly afterwards was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

May 7th, 1917 – R.F.C. Cadet August 7th, 1917 – Commissioned Second Lieutentant Camp Borden September 1917 – England. Posted to the 103 Squadron R.F.C. February 18th, 1918 – Salisbury, France. Posted to the 18 Squadron R.F.C August 15th,1918 Captain (Flight Commander) August 23rd, 1918 – Awarded Distinguished Flying Cross December 1918 – Mentioned in dispatches January 1919 – Cologne. Army of Occupation January to June 1919 – Mail carrier – Cologne to England July 12th,1919 Discharged due to demobilization.
