The son of Mr. and Mrs. William Gilchrist, the brother of William ‘Bill’ also in the RCAF. While serving with the RAF Alex was reported missing for over a year when his aircraft was damaged over enemy territory. His good fortune prevailed and he was able to make his way back to England.

He was returned to Canada and was stationed in Montreal, PQ. attached to Ferry Command. CDN 16/10/42.
