The son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Garrod of 77 King st. East, Chatham, ON. Oliver was 31 years old and single. He had thee brothers and four sisters, his brother Roy (273814) who served in the Great War.
Oliver had enlisted with the First Kent’s when they mobilized in Chatham in August of 1940. He trained with the Kent’s in Chatham, London, Halifax, Niagara-on-the Lake, New Westminster BC. and Terrace, BC. He would go overseas with a draft of reinforcement.
The CDN 9/03/43(P) reported that Pte. Garrod had arrived overseas safely. A cable from their son to his parents. He had enlisted with the First Kents in 1940.
He was posted to the RCR and proceeded to Sicily and Italy as part of the British Eighth Army. Oliver had become ill and had been hospitalized for a short time. It was only a short time later he was wounded. The CDN 13/09/44(P) reported Oliver’s parents had received a cable informing them that Pte. Garrod had been slightly wounded on 5 September and was in hospital.
Served in Canada. Later Transferred to the Royal Canadian Regiment and went overseas. Was slightly wounded and hospitalized.
Discharged November 28th, 1945.
