RCAF Allouette Sqd. (he was reported to have been the only Scotchman in a French-Canadian RCAF group) CDN 2/01/45.  Son of  Mr. and Mrs. John and Elizabeth Jane Garen of 104 Harvey Street, Chatham, ON. Brother of Major Keith Fraser (serving in Holland), Lieut. Leslie Wilson (HQ. in Ottawa) and Sgt. Pilot Donald RCAF). Prior to enlisting John was a watchmaker at Von Gunten’s Jewelry in Chatham.

Had been a member of the Kent Regiment for nearly three years.

Was stationed with the Eastern Air Command at Moncton New Brunswick before going overseas in January 1942. A jeweller by trade his duties in the air force were those of an instrument mechanic. He served with the First Canadian Bomber Squadron and latter was stationed for six months in Tunisa, North Africa with Canadian Alouette Squadron. Was mentioned in Dispatches.

He had been overseas for three years when he was listed as Mention in Dispatches in the King’s New Year Honour List 1 January, 1945 as per London Gazette of that date and AFRO 425/45 Dated 9/03/45.. The reason for the MID was not disclosed but it was thought to be connected with his mechanical talents he was serving with the RAF at the time. CDN 2/01/45

Recommendation read as follows: The exemplary manner in which this NCO has carried out his duties both in this country and during the African Campaign has been outstanding example to those with whom he has been employed. Without thought of personal gain, Sergeant Garen has worked many long hours and given his best in the interests of the Service. He is a superior tradesman and exceptionally tactful in handling men.
