Nursing Sister (R.R.C. 2nd Class) C.A.M.C. CEF, RG150, Accession 1992 – 93/166, Box 3308-10, Item: 397716, PDF: 3308-S010. Date of Birth 1884. From Dresden, ON. Nursing at Stratford, Perth Co., ON. Next of Kin: J. F. Morley, 29 Heilclees Ave., Stratford. Gertrude enlisted at Quebec City, PQ. She assigned a sum of her money to: Mrs. W. H. A. French, The Rectory, Shanty Bay, ON.  

Nursing Sister Gertrude Alice French went overseas with the 1st. Contingent and was in continuous service in France until July 1916, when she returned to Canada on three months furlough, going back in September 1916. She was decorated by the King.

She departed Canada with the 1st Contingent CEF sailing for England 3/10/14. Her first assignment was at No.2 General Hospital CAMC. She was reported serving in France 21/03/15. NS French returned to England 6/02/16 after nursing at No.3 General Hospital at Le Treport, France. 

French was given a Medical Board 18/02/16 as she was ill diagnosed as Enteroptosis [The abdominal descent of the intestines in the abdominal cavity, usually associated with the downward displacement of other viscera]. She was completely deaf in her left ear and had only partial hearing in her right ear, she had lost 10 lbs., had back pains, poor heart pulse and was not sleeping well. She was given a month of home service, 18/03/16.  She was given six weeks and for that time “unfit for service”. On her third Medical Board, she was granted 2 ½ month  beginning 10/04/16; at that time she was living at 13 Cheyne Place, Chelsea, S.W., England. 

She was reported nursing at the Duke of Connaught’s  Hospital at Taplow. She would return to England 17/07/16. After that she was “Fit for General Service”.
