Unit # 48th Gordon Highlanders

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Franklin of 117 Murray St., Wallaceburg, ON. A brother Cpl. Danny in the Essex Scottish was killed preparing for the attack on Dieppe, the second Wallaceburg fatality.

The WN 1308/42 reported that Charles P. was among recruits at No.1 Windsor (A.F.) of 315 Murray St., Wallaceburg, ON.

He received his basic training at Military District No.1. The WN 21/01/43 reported that Charles had arrived safely in England, he sailed with the Essex Scottish. He went to England with a re-enforcement draft. Charles was posted to the 48th  Gordon Highlanders which formed a part of the 8th Army in Italy. While serving in Italy Pte. Franklin was wounded and spent a considerable time in hospital.

Charles arrived back in Canada several day early surprising the War Services Committee at the ‘Glasshouse’ Fred Errey but along with Mr. and Mrs. Franklin they met the bus in Chatham and brought the wounded soldier back home. WN 28/06/4 

Charles passed away 1 May, 1992
