Son of John Ford and Mary Ann Graham of Muirkirk, ON. Next of Kin: Mr. John Ford.  A single section Foreman living at Muirkirk. MSA 726345 AC. Attestation: 27/02/1918 at London, ON. to 1st WOR. Medical at Chatham, ON. 6/10/17 Category A2.

Apparent age: 25 yrs. 11 mos. Height : 5’ 8”, Girth: 34 – 38, Complexion: Fair, Eyes: Grey, Hair: Light Brown Eye 20/20, Hearing: Normal, Weight: 142 #. At London, ON. 27/02/18. He had a Great West Life Insurance (Insured). A member  of the Canadian Order of Odd Fellows. 

Medical at Chatham 6/10/17. Apparent age: 27 yrs. 7 mos. He had a history of ‘Piles’. His enlistment was from 27/02/18 at London, ON. 

1/04/18  to 9/05/18 he was hospitalized for Pneumonia, Mumps and Dyptheria and was hospitalized. 

A court of Inquiry was convened at Queen’s Park. London, ON.

This is the first instance that a Medical Inquiry has been part of the circumstance of the soldiers death. JRH. 

Court of Inquiry:

Inquiring into the circumstances surrounding the death of No. 3132019 Pte. Roy Ford, “C” Co. 1st Depot Battalion, WOR.

1st Witness: Capt. J. Moore. S.M.C. Queen’s Park Hospital .

Admitted into camp hospital on the 1st of April 1918. Suffering from La Grippe, he was discharged to Wolsley Barricks on the 3rg of April, 1918 having developed symptoms of Pneumonia 

2nd Witness: Major G. C. Hale, Wolsley Barricks Hospital, being duly sworn in, gave evidence as follows: 

No. 3132019 Pte, Roy Ford was admitted to the military Hospital, Apr. 3rd 1918 with Pnemonia, on April 21st he contracted mumps on the same day Empyemy was suspected. The chest was aspirated, pus found a rib resected, his condition was most unsatisfactory, following this operation as well. It was thought that he had a general infection as well, from strepococeus.

On May 4th he developed a sever throat infection which was negative on culture, he was however given anti-diptheritic serum, his condition became steadily worse and he died at 11 p.m. 9/05/18.      

The court having inquired into the circumstances which caused the death of No. 3132019 Pte. Roy Ford are of the opinion that every care and precautions was taken by the opinion of the Medical authorities, and that death was due to general infection which could not be combated.

The loss of a son is always a difficult undertaking. It is a small tribute that Mary Ann Ford received her Memorial Cross and his father the memorial plaque and Scroll.

It is perhaps the beginning Spanish Flu of 1918 and Roy Ford was an early victim. JRH
