DOB: 22/09/1893. RG150, ACCESSION 1992-93/166. BOX: 2808-14, Item: 371718, PDF:-B2808-SO14. Born in Ridgetown, ON. N of K: Charles Eastlake. A Salesman. Single. Served 3 yrs., QOR – Toronto, ON. Also served with the 24th Bn. Cameron Highlanders of Canada. Attestation: 25/10/1914 at Winnipeg MN.

Apparent Age: 19 yrs., Height: 5′ 10 1/2″, Girth: 39 ½”, Complexion: Dark, Eyes: Grey, Hair: Brown, Weight 174#. Medical “Fit”, 25/10/1914 at Winnipeg, MN.

Trained in Canada from 9/11/14 to 5 May, 1915.   Charles and his Unit then sailed from Quebec aboard the S.S. Carpathia 17/05/15. Disembarked at Havre, France. TOS 2nd in FIELD 5/12/15.  

He entered the trenches in Flanders in August.  To be near his brother, Lieutenant James Eastlake, he transferred to the Canadian Field Artillery.

“While on duty the night of December 28th 1915, acting as telephone orderly in the artillery telephone dugout in support trenches, he was severely wounded by the explosion of an enemy shell, that struck the dugout. He was immediately attended to and evacuated to No.6 Red Cross Hospital, where it was found necessary to amputate his right leg. He died from the effect of the wounds on February 22nd 1916. Burial at Estaples, France.

He was wounded in the right leg being struck by a German shell fragment that struck the Tibia from behind at the knee joint. 4/01/16 at No. 6 Red Cross- Hospital at Estaples – Dangerously ILL 22/02/16 He had a very bad during the night of 28/01/16. By 31/01/16 “Slow progress – on the whole improving. 11/02/16 to 12/02/16 Looking and feeling well.

Wounded He was seriously wounded in the leg and other parts of his body by a shell. He was admitted to the base hospital at Etaples, France; his leg was amputated Jan. 27th but other complications set in and the young soldier passed away on Tues., Feb. 22. 1916.
