Enlisted with Kents. In 15/08/40 transferred to RCAF. Trained at Jarvis, Belleville, Uplands, Ottawa, Camp Borden, Verdun Manitoba P/O. RCAF. The son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Doyle of Joseph St., Chatham, ON., brother of Richard J. at RCAF-Jarvis, ON. Francis was married to Shirley (nee Johnson ) and they had a little son living at 3 McNaughton Ave., Chatham when he was reported home on a weeks furlough from Camp Borden.
Francis was reported spending a furlough after being awarded his “Wings” by none other than Air Marshall “Billy” Bishop at RCAF training base at Uplands, ON. CDN 1/08/42. It was reported in the CDN 6/08/42 that Sgt. Pilot Francis and Mrs. Doyle were arriving from Ottawa to spend the weekend
It was while in the RCAF, in October of 1943, that he was seriously injured when he broke his back in two places a result of a flying accident. He spent months in a cast at Fort William Hospital. CDN 28/09/43 (P) He spent months in a castreported that he escaped serious injury. The RCAF reported that Mrs. Doyle should hear from her husband and a report of his injury.
P/O Doyle, his wife and baby son Michael arrived in Chatham from Vardun, MB. in time to spend Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Doyle and Mr. and Mrs. W. Johnston, her parents. CDN 20/12/44
First word pf the accident was received from RCAF headquarters by his wife who was staying with her parents living on Grant Street, Chatham. A second message from her husband, Warrant Officer Doyle indicated that her husband is in the “best of spirits” and expected to get home soon. At the time of his accident he was stationed at For William ans a flying instructor for some time.
He was reported fully recovered in the CDN 23/08/44 and was serving overseas. P/O Doyle, his wife and baby son Michael arrived in Chatham from Vardun, MB. In time to spend Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Doyle and Mr. and Mrs. W. Johnston, her parents. CDN 20/12/44. The CDN 6/02/45 reported that P/O Doyle was home from Camp Borden after spending a weeks furlough with his wife a little son and his parents.
Promoted to the rank of Flying Officer.
Discharged August 1945.
