Pte. Dean enlisted with the Scots Guards at Manchester, July 1900, and after a declaration of peace, purchased his discharge in Oct. 1902.
Dean was promoted to Sergeant before going overseas with the 33rd battalion in Mar. 1916 and to Assistant Regimental Sergeant Major, Apr. 2.
He transferred to the 36th battalion on the disbanding of the 33rd battalion and reverted to the rank of sergeant to proceed to France Nov. 9, 1916 attached to the 4th battalion.
He was killed in action May 4, 1917.
