Vaccination- Yes.  Attestation: 1/06/1915 or 15/06/15, at London, ON to 34th Bn. He had previous military experience with the 28th Perth Regt. Date of Service: 23/10/15 – 17/06/16 – 16/12/17.

Apparent Age: 35 yrs., Height: 5’ 7”, Girth: 36”, Complexion: Fair, Eyes: Blue, Hair: Light Auburn. “Birth Mark on Buttock, “Fit” 15/06/15. 

Captain Arthur Deacon (MC) with the 34th Batt. 23/01/15 served in Canada, England and France with the 34th Bn. 17th Res. Batt. 4th Cdn Mounted Rifles. 8th Reserve Bn. 2nd Central Ont. Regt. and 1st Depot. Bn., WOR. 

Prev. 34th Bn. 26/06/15 – Feb. 22 to October. Unit sailed 23/10/15 – 4th CMR. 27/10/17 – 14TH G. H. B. Logne – GSW – Right Arm and Hand.

 Reported WIA 2/10/16. Sailed from Liverpool per S. S. Braemer Castle 16/12/17 Hospital ship.  

Wounded 2/10/16  at Passchendale. 24/10/16 – Discharged. 23/10/16. Unit sailed 23/10/15. 1st October 1916 – Somme Area GSW Left Thigh upper third of thigh – admitted 4th London, General Hospital 6/10/16. Wounds were healed 23/10/16 walks with a slight limp.    

26/10/17 Received Fracture of the Right Alma by M.G. bullet. Hospitalized 26/10/17. 8th Field Amb. & 44 C.C.S. – 27/10/17. 14 General, 28/10/17  to 3 London – Gen. Hosp. MCS – Wounded extensive. X-Ray reported fracture Yulva – Wound still 4 ½” long and 21/2 wide at centre. “This will take a long time to heal up  – It was noted. Arthur could not move his fingers, the arm is in dressing and splints took 4 ½ long / 2 ½ wide at the centre. It was going to take at less 4 ½ months to heal.

“This officer still complains that he is still suffering with some pain at the sight of injury. And is not fit for General Service. “GSW”. GSW In Left thigh – 23/10/16 present disability – “ This officer has fully recovered – Address: C.C.A.C. Recovered  at St. Leonards-On-Sea. Officer fit for “General Service”. 29/11/16.

4th CMR, AGE:37 “ This officer returned from medical leave much improved. Still weakness in leg which tires on much exertion – one month.”  5/01/18 – “Present condition: The wound is still 4 ½”  long and 2 ½” wide at the centre. Lower fragment is exposed in the wound. This wound will take a long time to heal up.”

“ The arm is in a dressing and Splint.”

12/02/18 – In hospital SOS. In Being moved to Canada. Last Pay:- 25//02/19. 3/11/18 to 25/02/19. Assigned Pay: $358.95 – Bal. Credit: 416/50. Wounded in France:- 24/10/16 to 7/12/17 Invaliding – To Canada. 

Promoted to Captain: “War Service Gratuity of $732.00. Discharge

Lieut. Deacon was Gazetted with the Military Cross on 21/01/1918 well he was serving with the 4th CMR. Was struck off strength: 25/02/1919 – 8/09/1920.

He was wounded in France 24/10/16 to 7/12/17 when he was invaliding to Canada.  

After the war Arthur served as the Secretary-Manager of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce. The “Vernon’s” City of Stratford of 1924 directory refers to Lt. Col. A. W. Deacon MC.

Arthur Deacon passed away 31 Oct., 1934 and he is buried in the Avondale Cemetery, Stratford, ON.
