John was serving in the USA / Canadian First Special Service Force (aka. The ‘Devil’s Brigade)
The son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Davies Sr. of 168 ½ King West, Chatham, ON. Tpr. Davies who had seen action in Italy was reported in hospital after receiving an injury to his eye. An article in the CDN 25/01/44 (P), reported that “he hoped to get back in action within a few weeks”.
Davies who had seen action in the Aleutian island of Kiska and then moved to the US Army in Italy. Tpr. John Davies was one of the men invalided was reported aboard hospital ship “Lady Nelson” that docked at Halifax, NS. 12 April, 1944.
John was fighting with the 5th US Army near Casino when he received a shrapnel splinter to his to his left eye loosing its sight on a hill a mile from the besieged city of Casino. An article in the CDN 25/01/44 (P), reported that “he hoped to get back in action within a few weeks.
