Private James Edward Cunningham trained with the Chatham Collegiate Institute Cadets.
Private James Edward Cunningham transferred from the 44th. to the 36th. Battalion of Hamilton April 14th, 1915, leaving for overseas on the “S.S. Corsican” June 18th, 1915, and arriving at Shorncliffe July 1st, 1915. He proceeded to France January 5th, 1916, to reinforce the 4th. Battalion, later attached to the 3rd. Field Company, Canadian Engineers, as barb-wire cutter. He received shrapnel wounds April 14th, 1919, while in the Ypres Salient, and after treatment in various hospitals in England was invalided to Canada arriving at Halifax August 1st, 1917. He convalesced at the London Military Convalescent Hospital.
Discharged at London May 9th, 1919 as medically unfit for Military Service
