Private W. Lloyd Cucksey trained with the 72nd, Seaforth Cadets, later transferring to the 72nd. Seaforth Highlanders, 1912 to 1914.

Private W. Lloyd Cucksey left Vancouver August 20th, 1914 arriving at Valcartier Camp August 29th. He embarked for England September 30th, landing at Plymouth October 19th, transferring in February 1915 to the 6th. D.C.O.R. and proceeding to France February 9th. He was sent to the base April 28th, with 285 men left from 1050 who took part in the Ypres show of April 23rd, 1915. In June he was blown out of the trenches four times and again July 15th, when he was admitted to Hospital at Boulogne, suffering from shrapnel wounds from shoulder to hip, and also heart inflated and turned to the right.

He was transferred to Reading Hospital, England, September 9th, and removed to Monk’s Horton Camp October 10th, 1915. He was given three months furlough, arriving in Canada December 3rd, 1915 and entered Victoria Military Hospital, and later given Convalescent Home for three months.

Private W. Lloyd Cucksey received his honorable discharge March 1st, 1916, being unfit for further military service. He entered the C.P.R. freight offices but owing to his state of nerves had to leave in three weeks. Later he was attached to the permanent staff in the money department of the Vancouver Post Office.
