Pte. Cucksey left Vancouver Aug. 20, 1914 arriving at Valcartier Camp Aug 29. He embarked on the troop-ship “Virginia” Sept. 30 landing at Plymouth Oct. 20.
After training at Salisbury Plains he proceeded to France Feb. 9 1915 going into the trenches for the first time Feb. 23.
He was wounded at the “Horseshoe” north of Ypres, Apr. 24 and admitted to Fir Vale Hospital England where an operation was performed and also several pieces of shrapnel removed.
He refused to accept his discharge – because of a promise – and while convalescing took up duties as bugler at Napier Barracks, Shorncliffe on July 14 and entered C.A.M.C. at the Duchess of Connnaught Hospital, Taplow, Sept. 13.
After five operations performed on his ankle he transferred in Nov 1916 to South Camp, Dibgate, leaving England on escort duty Dec. 19, 1916 and arriving in Halifax Jan. 1, 1917.
He transferred from Shorncliffe to DADMS Seaford Camp volunteering again for active service.
He went in to training for France July 8 and crossed over Aug. 25 going immediately into the trenches.
He was wounded in the hand Oct. 24 and was sent to Belgium Nov. 3.
He was reported Missing at Passchendaele Nov. 10, 1917.
