A resident of Chatham for 15 years when he was called up at the age of 53. A native of England he had joined the RN on 17 July, 1907 and served five years on active service and seven years on reserve. He served on HMS Dreadnought, Pathfinder, Haggeion, Akron and the destroyers Nith and “D”.

When war broke out he was a painter living at 25 Richmond St., Chatham, ON. On the naval reserve list he came under the orders of the Dept. of National Defence and was required to report to the Senior Naval Officer in Halifax NS. for assignment.
