William enlisted in the 1st Kents in October, 1940 transferring to the RCOC he went overseas in September 1941. As was often the case, civilians and service groups would send packages to men and women serving overseas the Tilbury “young people” sent packages to William and it was reported in the CDN 21/09/42 (Cedar Springs section) that Mrs. Bunning receive acknowledgement with thanks from Cfmn. Cleveland.
He landed in France in Normandy on D+12 (18/06/44). William also served in Holland and Belgium before being returned to Canada 16/02/45 where he spent time in hospital. The CDN 21/02/45(P) reported living at 43 Taylor Ave., Chatham on a compassionate leave. He was discharged from the army in April of 1945. KCFA 18/10/45. Cfmn Cleveland was reported spending a month’s leave with his wife and family after being overseas for three years. CDN 22/02/45.
