Private Thomas R. Clay trained at London, Ontario, until July 1915, when he left for overseas. In March 1916 he went from West Sandling to France, transferring to the 18th. Battalion. He went with that unit through St. Eloi and other engagements an the Somme front until November 18th, when he suffered a gunshot wound in the left hand. After treatment in Leeds War Hospital, England, Private Clay was given light duty at Bramshott Camp, owing to disability also from trench feet, but returned to France December 1917.
