Born in Chatham, the son of Thomas. and Elizabeth Clark of 31 Landsdowne Ave., (also lived at 48 Kent St. in 1942), Chatham, ON. The brother of Vera and Garney [three brothers and two sisters pre-deceased – not named]. A former pupil of Central School.

The husband of Sandra (nee Nelles). The father of  Linda, Barbara, Pam and step-daughters Christine, Brenda and Janette.  

Harold enlisted with the 2nd Kent Regt. in 1940. Appears on the “Muster Roll” of the 2nd Bn., Kent Regiment, (MG), N.P.A.N. in 1940. Service number A470400, Pte.

Served with Kent Regiment from 1940 to 1941.

Joined the forces in London, and was sent to British Columbia for six months. He was stationed at Prince George with Oxford Rifles. He went overseas with Oxford Rifles in 1942. He was transferred to the R.C.R. from England went to Africa, Sicily and Italy.

It was reported in the CDN 1/12/42 that Harold had left for Prince George, BC to be stationed with the Oxford Rifles.

He went overseas with Oxford Rifles in 1942. It was while Pte. Clark was serving in Italy, with the RCR, that on 10 December, 1943 he was taken as a POW by the Germans.

The CDN 13/04/43 reported that Harold had safely arrived overseas. Originally he enlisted with the Second Kents, transferred to the Oxford Rifles.

The CDN 29/12/43 reported he had transferred to the RCR service number A 82311.

Clark was serving in Italy that on 10 December, 1943 he was taken as a POW by the Germans in Ortona. For several months Harold was a prisoner at Stallag 2D but in February of 1944 he informed his parents that he had been on a march for several days before arriving at Satlag 2A, his feet were very swollen to the point he could not wear his boots.

A photo of Pte. Clark appeared in the CDN 23/02/44(P) reporting that Harold was a POW in Germany the following was the official notice received by his parents:

The CDN 2/06/44(P), age 23 was taken as a POW while serving in Italy.

A82311 Pte. Harold Leonard Clark, previously reported missing in action now officially reported by International Red Cross Committee, Geneva, Prison—of-war at Camp Stalag 7A Germany. Prisioner-of-war number 125510. Further information follows when received.

Liberated May 2nd, 1945 by the American Forces. Was sent to Holland. It was reported that he had been repatriated to England from Stalag 2A in the CDN 10/05/45(P).

Came back to Canada July 26th, 1945. Reported returning from overseas aboard the Ile de France. CDN 12/07/45.

Discharged September 13th, 1945.

Harold Leonard passed away 15 February, 1987 – Burial at Maple Leaf Cemetery – Chatham, ON.
