CHRISTNER, Walter E

 

The son of Bert Christner, (his wife Dorothy (nee Magee) and family (a son Gordon and a daughter Grace L.) were living at 5 Glass St, Wallaceburg). Walter had a brother Bert and two sisters Ellen in Dresden and Mrs. Orville Haney living in Chatham.

The Wallaceburg News reported that L/Cpl. Christner had been seriously wounded in action, He had enlisted with the Essex Scottish 18/04/1940 with mobilization. He had been serving in England for 3 ½ years before going to France.

The CDN 29/07/44 reported that then L/Cpl. Christner went to France in early July serving in the Company commanded by Major Jack W. Burgess. He suffered severe wounds according to information received  by his wife at her home 5 Glass St., Wallaceburg.

His father believed his wounds were to his abdomen and chest. He was serving in Normandy at the time. It was later reported in the WN 3/08/44 reported that he sustained a fractured fermur, crushed chest and crushed upper abdomen. At the time he was in a company commanded by Major J. W. Burgess also from Wallaceburg. He was a native of Dresden and 36 years old at the time of his injury. In prior years Walter was very active in sports and played baseball for Dresden.

At the time of his injury he was dispatch-rider .

Discharged January 9th, 1946.
