John enlisted on the 2nd of October in 1942 with the 30th Reconnaissance Battalion in Windsor, Ontario. He trained in Dundurn, Saskatoon, and also in Nova Scotia before sailing for England and arriving there on July 28, 1943. From there, he transferred to the Essex Scottish. He served in Belgium, Holland and Germany, and was in Nuremburg on VE-Day. Sgt. Charlton returned to Windsor from overseas duty on the 19th of January in 1946.
