Regimental number: 401920. Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box: 1616-33, Item: 95349, PDF: B1616-S033, Date of Birth: 22/01/1897 at Leicestershire, England. N of K: Mrs. D. A. Chandler (mother) 76 King St. East, Chatham, ON. Later to be at 118 Lorne Ave., Chatham. A cabinet maker. Served with the 24th Kent Regt. prior to the war, Attestation: 6/05/15 age 18 years 3 Mos. 5’ 7”. His medical was completed 14/08/15 to the 33rd Batt. in B-Coy. O/S.

Private Horace Chandler trained for two years with the 24th. Kent Regiment, Chatham.

Pte. Chandler arrived in England 26/08/15 and transferred from the 33rg Batt, at Shorncliffe on 27/08/15. He joined the 2nd Canadian Batt. on 19/01/16 and was Taken On Strength the following day. There was some confusion that  arose after his first combat experience on 18/09/16. He was actually in hospital when it was reported that he was KIA 10/09/16. That was corrected by 21/09/16; he was sick with Diarrhea. Curators note: This is the second time that a soldier was listed KIA. In the 1st case Pte. Bowd was seriously wounded but recovered. Both soldiers were listed on the Kent Co. Roll of Honour. JRH 

Private Horace Chandler left Canada with a draft from the 33rd. Battalion in August 1915, and proceeded to France in January 1916 to the 2nd. Canadian Battalion.  

For a time he was attached to the CAMC. His first hospital was the General Hospital at Camies 4/10/16 and 7/10/16 at No.6 Convalescent Hospital. On 12/10/16 he was at No.5 Convalescent Hospital and on 9/11/16 he was discharged back to the 2nd Batt. 

Taken sick May 13th, 1917 and sent to hospital, transferred to the staff and remained with 2nd Canadian Stationary Hospital until he was sent to England March 19, 1919. Sailed for Canada July 11th, 1919.  He began his trip back to Canada 11/07/1919. His discharge certificate had as his units served in 2nd Infantry Batt. and No.2 Stationary Hospital. It was determined that he was blind in his left eye. He was discharged from the CEF 20/07/1919 due to demobilization.

Horace’s Discharge Certificate had him listed as serving with the 2nd Infantry Batt. and at No.2 Stationary Hospital with the CAMC. He was 21 years 11 months at Quebec 22/07/1919.
