Prior to the war John was working at the F.C. Carr Rubber Factory in Tilbury. He enlisted with the 99th Bn. 22/01/1916 at Tilbury.

He trained in Tilbury with the local platoon until April, then to London, ON before leaving for overseas to England in June of 1916. He was part of a reinforcement draft to France 6/08/16 to join in the fighting on the Somme Front where he was killed in action 13/09/1916.
Embarked for England from Halifax – 31/05/16 – Disembarked at Liverpool, England 8/06/16 – 27/07/16 to the 99th Bn. Arv. in England aboard the S.S. Olympic 8/06/16 – 27/07/16.
Transferred to the 35th Bn., 6/07/16 – 8/08/16 TOS: FROM 35TH – In Field – 6/08/16 with the 35th Bn. Trans to 19th Bn. – FRANCE. – 7/08/16. Arv. – TOS to 19th Bn. – 14/08/16 Arv. left for his unit – Joined unit 19/09/16.
He went to the trenches on 7/09/16 and was Killed In Action- 13/09/16. Before going to the trenches he wrote to a friend; “I am ordered to the front trenches, now it is either fight or be at rest.”
