The grandson of Charles Case, related to Joe and Mary Drollaird. The son of F/Sgt. C. E. and Elizabeth Case of 55 Barth St., later 84 Raleigh St., Chatham, brother of F/O. William “Bill” C. (R109938). Russell with the RCAF in Canada. The family had moved away from Tilbury so he attended McKeough School and high school at Chatham Vocational and Chatham Collegiate and was employed at the Ontario Steel Plant in Chatham before he enlisted.
Russell enlisted in Chatham, ON. with the Essex Scottish Regt. 19/09/1939 age 18 years. He went overseas in July of 1940. He was in action on the Dieppe Raid 19/08/1942 in France. The CDN 22/08/42 reported that Mrs. C.E. Case of Barth St., Chatham had many “Breathless hours of waiting and torturing anxiety” waiting for news from overseas. “All’s well and safe – writing” were the magic words she was waiting for which “brought comfort to the heart of a woman.” Sgt. Russell was given the opportunity of returning to Canada to take an officer’s course which he turned down because as he wrote to his parents, “He wanted to stay overseas with the boys”.
He was serving with the Essex Scottish when he was wounded in action at the Falaise Gap battle in 1944. He was hospitalized at the Christie St. Hospital in London, ON., and was discharged from the army due to his wounds. Russ was reported among 37 other wounded from Military District No.1 and had arrived at Halifax aboard the British hospital ship Aba. CDN 15/11/44 He became a counselor at the Ernest C. Drury School for the hearing impaired at Milton, ON. He retired and was living in Milton.
