Born on December 8, 1918, at Tilbury (South Harwich, Twsp.,) Kent Co., ON. The son of L. J. Carson of Mount Elgin, ON and brother of David (Chatham Twsp.), Mrs. Harold Snobelen of South Harwich and Mrs. Carmen Knott, 3rd Concession, Raleigh, Twsp., Kent Co. Lewis lived and worked on the farm of Mr. and Mrs. Knott for 15 years prior to his enlistment at Mount Elgin, ON.
Lewis, at the age of 22, enlisted in the RCAF in August of 1941, and received his Wings at MacDonald, Manitoba. He went overseas in March of 1943, attaining the rank of Warrant Officer Class II, Royal Canadian Air Force, 625 Sqdn.
He was posted overseas to England for Bomber Command. On 29 /01/44. WO. Carson volunteered to fly on a bombing mission to Berlin with his girlfriend’s brother as a co-pilot. The Lancaster #DV 364. This aircraft did not return from this night ops against Berlin, Germany. Lewis was reported MIA 29/01/1944. He has no known grave. It was later confirmed that all seven members where killed and have no known graves. He was 25 years old. His father was living in Tillsonburg in 1944 CDN 3/02/44.
KIA – Date of Death: 29/01/1944, in Lancaster bomber on Night Air Ops. Over Berlin, Germany. He was the only Canadian aboard the aircraft.
