It was a Thursday in October of 1940 that Mark Card received word that he was to report to London, ON., prepared to leave for the RCAF Manning Pool in Brandon, Manitoba. On the Sunday evening prior to his leaving Mrs. Cecil Tinney arrived at his parents home to present Mark with a wrist watch and a written address from the community. As follows:

Dear Mark,

The challenge comes to us all, “How can I serve my country best?” You have met this challenge and have decided to join the RCAF. But before you leave we wish to express to you our thanks. You as so many of the men of this country, are willing to face the consequences, that we may be free. For so much we know, thanks is meager word to express our feelings, but, our language boasts no better.

While you are away we will miss you in our activities in which you took such an active part. Your thoughtfulness has brought so much pleasure to the people of this community that we feel as you enter the RCAF your wholesome life will have its influence on the young men with whom you will be associating.

Mark, as you are going away we wish you to have this watch to remind you that our est wishes and prayers will follow you wherever duty calls you.

In the words of Minnie L. Haskin we say, “Go out into the world and put your hand into the hand of God, that shall be to you better than light and safer than the known way”.

Signed, on behalf of the community,

The Zone Township Patriotic Committee.
