Private William John Callery went overseas with the 1st. Canadian Contingent September 21st, 1914, training an Salisbury Plains until January 1915, when, due to an accident to his foot while on duty, he was rendered medically unfit for active service.February 5th, 1916, he was attached to the 9th. Battalion, Tinworth, later at Shorncliffe, and returned to Canada.
Private Callery re-enlisted January 24th, 1917, with the 256th. Railway Construction Battalion, arriving in England April 7th, 1917. he trained at Purfleet camp a short time, proceeding to France with the 10th. Canadian Railway Troops. March 1st,1917, he received a promotion to Corporal and to Sergeant June 17, 1917.
He was gassed in July 1917 but continued in service until March 1918 when he was pronounced medically unfit for active service and returned to England doing garrison duty with the R.C.R., Niper Barracks, Shorncliffe, until November 23rd, 1918, when he left for Borden, Witley and Southampton, thence to Canada, arriving in Chatham December 2nd, 1918.
Sergeant William John Callery received his honorable discharge December 21st, 1918, being medically unfit for further military service.
