Born in Montreal, PQ., 8 June, 1913. He was living in Wallaceburg ON. His next of Kin was Francis Lillian Cairns of 56 Water St., Wallaceburg.

Originally enlisting in the Royal Navy in 1939 began duty 13 April, 1940 after being married on the 10th of April he embarked at Halifax and served on HMCS, Stadacona, Emerald, York and HMS Witherington.

The Wallaceburg News 23/04/42 reported CPO. Cairns who had been with the Royal Navy for over a year was welcomed back to Wallaceburg at the Rokeby Lodge – Knights of Pythias. According to the article CPO Cairns was the “first Wallaceburg man under fire while serving with the Navy. He on the other had had “practically nothing (to say about) his personal experiences”.

In the WN 27/01/44, ERA Cairns was stationed at the RCN Barracks in Halifax, NS.  He held the rank of “Warrant Engineer”.  He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres during the war.
