E.H.B. Butler enlisted in August 1914 with the 1st Canadian Battalion, and sailed with them on S.S “Laurentic” in October 1914. Trained with them on Salisbury Plains and left with the battalion for France in February 1915 and served with them until admitted to hospital in June 1915. On discharge from hospital in September 1915 was attached to Canadian Section, General Headquarters in the Field. Returned to England in August 1917 to train in the Royal Flying Corps and was gazetted a Flying Officer in November 1917. Served continuously on home defence and in France until the cessation of hostilities. Posted to the Royal Air Force Reserve of Officers in May 1919, and was repatriated to Canada on S.S.”Canada”, arriving at Montreal on May 18th. ’19.
