Butcher, Thomas H

 

Born in Richmond Virginia. Enlisted in the US Navy at the Naval Training Station, Norfolk VA. The son of Thomas H. Butcher Sr. who served with the A.E.F. in the Great War.  From Chatham, ON., the husband of Anita who was living at 64 Inshes Ave., Chatham.

He served for 18th months in the Atlantic theatre before going to the Pacific. There he saw action at Okinawa, Luzon and Leyte battles in the actions to retake the Philipines from the Japanese. The destroyer he was on was one of nine in the fleet, all but his ship were sunk by Japanese “Kamikaze” suicide planes. 700 Kamikaze planes attacked the US fleet off Okinawa on 6/04/1945. Shortly after being transferred to another ship the ship he left was sunk by a suicide attack. “Seaman Butcher feels that he has a streak of good luck in his veins.”

Served three years in the United States Navy. Two and a half of which he spent overseas. Promoted to Petty Officer.

Discharged from USN in September 1945.
