The son of Clarence and Effie Burkholder of Breslau, ON. Prior to his enlistment, he was working at the Clarke Hockey Stick Factory. He transferred to the Sunshine Manufacturing which was a munitions plant. Donald was badly injured in an accident there and spent his 19th birthday in the Kitchener Hospital.

It was while in hospital that he received notice that he had to report for military duty. In January 1944, he enlisted in Chatham and began his training at BTC No.12. He then went to go to Camp Ipperwash before proceeding overseas in July of 1944. While he was in England, Don was assigned to the South Saskatchewan Regt.

Don was injured by shrapnel in his leg and mouth and spent his 20th birthday in hospital in England. He returned to France on the 18th of September after only six weeks of being wounded. He was KIA 29/10/44 at the age 21. He is buried at Schoonselhof Cemetery, Belgium (photos of cemetery and grave marker) CVWM.

The Memorial Park in Breslau is named in Donald’s honour. RCL Book 5.
