Buckerrough, Robert “Bob” Clarke

 

Son of Clarence A. and Nettie A. Buckberrough, Robert was born in Windsor and his family moved to Blenheim, Ontario. He received schooling in Windsor and later in Blenheim after his father’s death. His sister Pauline was living in Blenheim with her mother and brother. Prior to his enlistment, Robert was employed by the Mirwin’s Stores Ltd. as the assistant manager of their Chatham store.

Robert trained in Calgary and received his wings at the No. 4 Bombing and Air Gunnery School, Fingal, ON. In October of 1943, his mother, accompanied by Her sisters Mrs. Harry Campbell of Ridgetown and Mrs. Mac Huffman, attended the “Wings’ ceremony at Fingal RIN-IP 11/10/17. Robert was reported being from Blenheim in an article and picture of “Windsor and District Men Are Presented With Wings” (Paper unknown).  

Robert arrived overseas in the fall of 1943 and had been on operational flights before his death.

Mrs. Buckberrough received her telegram from the RCAF on the 11th of July reporting that her son had lost his life.

Age: 22, KIA – Date of Death: 11/07/1944, Lancater bomber crash at low angle in Melton Mowbray, England. Service No: J/90667.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead, Grave/Memorial Reference: 52. D. 7.

Cemetery: BROOKWOOD MILITARY CEMETERY. Pilot Officer Robert Clark Buckberrough is also commemorated on the Bomber Command memorial Wall in Nanton, AB.
