Sapper Frederick Brownsell trained at Ottawa for ten weeks, embarking in April 1916 for overseas. He was stationed at Bramshott Camp until August 5th, 1916, when he was admitted to Military Hospital suffering from Ptomaine Poisoning. Ten days later he was sent to the C.C.A.C. Bath, England, returning to Canada by the “Missanabie” in September, 1916.
Sapper Frederick Brownsell received his discharge from Quebec October 1st, 1916, being unfit for active service.
