TILBURY EAST SOLDIER RETURNS

“Private Frederick Brown of Tilbury East returned home Friday night from the trenches. He enlisted in the 99th Bn., and transferred successively to the 35th and 87th Bn. and was wounded with four machine gun bullets in his right elbow. He was acting as dispatch carrier at the time when the Germans about 12 o’clock at night opened fire from the trenches, to prevent an expected charge. He was laying down with his rifle and raised his elbow with the rifle when he was struck. A companion in attempting to aid him, raised his head and was killed with a bullet in the forehead. Brown then crawled to a shell hole, where he remained for 48 hours, subsisting on his emergency rations, after which he took refuge behind a pile of ammunition, when he was assisted by a companion. During his imprisonment in the shell hole he applied first aid and poured the contents of bottles of iodine on the wound to prevent blood poisoning.”
