Prior to his enlistment in May of 1942 Jack had served six years in the Chatham Fire Department. It was reported in the CDN 30/01/45 (P) that ‘Fireman Jack’ had returned from his volunteered Firefighting in the ‘Blitz areas in England. Jack had spent 2 ½ years overseas fighting fires.
Jack went overseas in July of 1942. Prior to his joining the Chatham Fire Dept. he was employed at the International Harvester plant in Chatham. Jack was married for 18 years and the family lived at 160 Forest St., Chatham. They had a son and daughter.
Remained in Canada for two months before going overseas in July 1942 where he served in Southampton, England with the Canadian Fire Fighters Unit. He entered as Leading Fireman and was promoted to Section Leader. John received qualified papers for First Officer. When he was discharged, he held the rank of Leading Fireman.
He was officially discharged on March 8th, 1945.
The Chatham firefighter ended his service in England, along with other Canadian fire fighters in fitting style. Even during the farewell parade in London an alarm was sounded and the other fire fighters allowed the Canadian firemen who were going home to handle the situation. “The large fire was brought under control in record time”.
