The son of Thomas Brodie of Lydican Avenue, Chatham, ON. Sgt. Brodie was the youngest son in the family.

John received his training in the western provinces and the Bahama Islands.

He enlisted as a Sergeant in R.C.A.F. in November 1941. John spent his first year of training in Western Canada. He then went to Bermuda in January 1943. From Bermuda, he returned to Canada after being there for six months and flew to England. From there, he flew to Iceland and Greenland and later to India. It was reported in the CDN 30/06/43 (P), that he had arrived safely in India.  He gained his commission while in India. He returned to Canada September 1945.

Discharged September 1945.
