Born 14/10/1919 in Blenheim, ON. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bristow of Blenheim and later they lived at 63 Centre St., Chatham. Albert attended public school and the Blenheim High School.
Prior to the war he worked at the E. Todd Grocery Store in Blenheim. He was also a member of the Kent Regt. from 1936 to the outbreak of the war.
Albert enlisted in London, ON. with the Royal Canadian Regt 12/09/39 as a Sgt. Instructor. He went overseas 30/12/39 and arrived in England. Between 27 May and 4 June. Albert was on the beach at Dunkirk along with 338,000 other troops that was rescued during Operation Dynamo. He made two missions to Norway after returning from Dunkirk.
In 1942 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in January. He transferred to the Essex Scottish and was promoted to Sergeant-Major. In 1944 he took part in the invasion of France an the subsequent advances. On 21 July, 1944 he was reported taken as a POW near Caen, France CDN 23/11/44. While serving with The Essex Scottish, he was taken as a POW and was captive until being freed. On the 2nd of May, 1945, he arrived safe in England on the 6th of May.
Albert would return to Chatham with his bride Margaret from Sussex, England, and two children Margaret (3 years old) and William Jr. (1 year old). On 21 June, 1945 they were setting up their house at 65 Centre St. in Chatham. The CDN 22/06/45 reported that he arrived the morning of the 22nd in London, ON. The CDN reported that the veteran of all the war years would become a new constable on the city police force. CDN 13/08/45. Albert was discharged from military service in August, 1945.
