Brisley Gordon Mervin

 

The son of Henry and Olive (nee Best) Brisley. He attended S.S. #10 School.Prior to the war, Gordon was working at International Harvester in Chatham, ON. He would return to IHC after the war working as a Principle Clerk in Order & Distribution until he retired in 1992.

Gord enlisted with the 2nd Kent Regt. in Chatham, ON. in 1942. He appears on the “Muster Roll” of the 2nd Bn., Kent Regiment (MG), N.P.A.N. (date unknown), service number A470271 as a Private.

Gordon served as a Quartermaster until until he received his draft notice to the Army at which time he enlisted with the Navy in Windsor, ON. He spent two months in Windsor learning wireless techniques and basic training. He was shipped to St. Hyacinthe, Quebec for further wireless training from July 1942 to January 1943. He practiced Ordinary Telegraphy (O/T) when he was shipped to HMCS Strathcona, Halifax, NS. He was then shipped to HMCS Matapedia, where they were on convoy duty with merchant ships between Halifax, St. John’s, Newfoundland, New York and Boston.  He had a few anxious moments when the ship collided with a merchant ship.  Some of the sailors jumped overboard.  He was on the ship from January 1943 to May 1945. 

While on HMCS Matapedia doing convoy duty from Halifax to St. John, Newfoundland, New York and Boston between January 1943 to May 1945. In June 1945 he was then posted to HMCS Rockcliffe (mine sweeper) a ‘good will tour’ and then to HMCS Hunter in Windsor in September 1945 where he was discharged.

Gordon passed away 3 August, 2006 with internment at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Chatham, ON.
