Brisco, Frederick Benjamin

 

Born 5/02/1924, the son of E. C. ‘Ernie’ Brisco and Lala (Whitebread) of William St., Chatham. The brother of E. C. ‘Bill’ Brisco. The husband of Maxine Louise (nee Hodgson) (2010). The father of Peter, Paul, Tim, Barry, Brian and Robert. Prior to enlisting, Rick was prominent in the Boy Scouts, Rick and another Chatham Scout Edgar Miller (RCNVR) were the only two Chatham Scouts ever to receive the “Bushman’s Thong” which is the highest credential a Scout can obtain. He was a Scout at Number Three Scout Troop and also the Sea Scouts.    

 

Rick attended Queen Mary School and the Chatham Collegiate Institute.

Rick joined the RCAF on his 18th birthday 1 April 1942. Frederick B. Brisco was posted to RCAF Haggersville. The husband of Hester (nee Carroll). The sons and E. C.’s bride would be spending Christmas at the family home. CDN 23/12/42

AC2 Brisco was reported returning to the Toronto Manning Pool after a weekend leave. CDN 20/07/42.   Rick was reported home from the Manning Pool, Toronto on a forty-eight hour leave to see his parents. CDN 24/08/42.   

The CDN 24/06/43 reported that Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Brisco were planning to attends LAC Rick Brosco’s graduation at the RCAF school in Hagersville. The proud parents of Pilot Officer  Brisco attended the “Wings Parade” where he received his commission, the youngest member of the class at the age of 19 years.

By January 1944, Rick was at No.5 S.F.T.S. in Brantford, ON when given a seven day leave to visit his parents CDN 25/01/44. Rick was reported to have been promoted to the rank of Flying Officer in February 1944. He was an instructor at RCAF-Brantford celebrating his 20th birthday when his promotion came through.

The Brisco – Hodgson wedding was reported in the CDN 17/08/44  The CDN 17/08/44 reported that FO. Brisco and his wife returned from their honeymoon at Bala in Muskoka and would leave Chatham to take up residence in Brantford. FO. Brisco and wife arrived from Brantford to spend a short furlough with his parents.

Rick passed his training with such a high rating that he served as a Flying Instructor in the British Commonwealth Air Training Command. As a result, he never served overseas. By the end of the war, 55% of Bomber Command crews were Canadian of whom nine thousand were casualties.

Rick was reported home from the Manning Pool, Toronto on a forty-eight hour leave to see his parents. CDN 24/08/42.

After the war he returned to Chatham where he began a long business career starting with his father who had the Real Estate business Brisco & Sons. He was involved in many community functions as the Returning Officer for Chatham and Kent for Provincial and Federal elections. Volunteered in the United Way, YMCA, the Chatham Granite Club, Chairman of the Kent County Board of Education, Victory Lodge, and the Alchom Shrine as an active member at Christ Church.  Perhaps his greatest contribution was his more than sixty years with the Chatham Concert Band.  Rick had a long connection with music. It began when he was only twelve years old and Sid Chamberlain, a teacher at the Chatham Collegiate Institute, asked him to join their band. After the war, he was a fixture at the weekly concerts in the park.   

His hobbies included hunting, curling, golf, sailing and playing with the Chatham Concert Band.

Frederick passed away at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance 5/11/2014 at the age of 91 years. CDN 18/11/14.
