Resident Merlin

Regimental number: 189806 Rank: GNR / Sigr. Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 1045 – 52, File: 38283, Item: 62885, PDF B1045-S052. Date of Birth 20/06/1894 at Merlin, ON. Son of John K. and Ida Brethour of Merlin. A single painter by trade. At the time of his enlistment he was living at 53 Elizabeth St. in Chatham, ON.

Attestation 4/01/1916 at St. Thomas, ON. to 91st Bn. Colin was 21 years old, 5’ 5”, complexion: Medium, eyes: Blue with Brown hair.

After his basic training he embarked at Halifax 29/06/16, arriving at Liverpool, England 18/07/16 aboard the S.S. Olympic. He was TOS.

Reported wounded CDP 10/11/1916. Colin was reported accidentally wounded in November of 1917. CDN 10/11/17. The actual date of his wounding was 29/10/17 recorded as a fractured the result of an accidental wounding. He was treated at No.12 Canadian Hospital at Rouen for a GSW to his left and a facial wound.

Colin would be transferred to the 5th Southern General Hospital, arriving there 8/11/17. His wound to the thumb, index and middle finger were all injured by a GSW “self-inflicted”.

He would recover from his wounds, only to come down with the Mumps. He was then admitted to the Red Cross Hospital. While in hospital he was assigning $15.00 of his pay to a Mrs. J. M. Brethour of Linwood, in Scotland. 

5/01/1919 Colin applied for permission to marry Jean M. of Buxton and was granted.
