Pte. Regimental number: 34268. Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93, Box: 1039 – 45, Item: 62531, PDF: B1039-S046. Date of Birth: 27/01/1894 at Chatham, ON. Next of Kin: David Brennan, 65 Centre St., Chatham, ON. A single electrician. Served in the 24th Kent Regt. Attestation: 24/09/1914 at Valcartier, PQ. age 20 years / 9 Mos. 5’ 6” Comp. Dark, Eyes Hazel, Hair Dark Brown. It was noted during his medical that he had a scar on his right arm.
He went overseas aboard the S.S. Scotian sailing from Quebec City with #2 Stationary Hospital AMC. Frank served overseas with the 12th Field Ambulance AMC and 14th Field Ambulance, 47th Battalion, served in England and France he was awarded the 1914 Star 25/04/18. (You had to have seved during the actions at Ypres in 1914 to receive the ‘Mons Star’).
Private David Francis Brennan embarked with the First Contingent November 20th, 1914. After being in England about three months he was sent to France with the medical Corps to the Red Cross Hospital. Here he attended the wounded and worked in the X Ray room, until transferred to the Red Cross Hospital, Taplow Bucks, England, on similar duties.
Frank was admitted to La Touquet hospital suffering from Epilepsy 2/06/15. From there he was transferred to hospital in England at St. Leonards Hospital. 5/06/15 he was admitted to V.A.D.H. Filsham Park, St. Leonards – 2 East Gen. Hosp. Brighton admitted 16/06/15. After treatment he was granted a furlough on 25/06/15.
Regarding his Epilepsey during an examination in June, 1915 at Taplow hospital before being sent back to France he said:-
“He was taken by the Epilepsy no one at Taplow had seen him have a dizzy spell as they were taken while away from the hospital.”
He said he does not remember of any in private life.
He was Taken On Strength (TOS) at the Canadian Red Cross Hospital CAMC – Shorncliff, Eng. And on 17/09/15 he was admitted to the Cdn. Red Cross suffering fro VDG uretral and discharged 17/09/15 fit for Duty. He returned to the CAMC 10/10/16. He was assigned to CAMC – Westenhanger Depot 28/06/17 until 31/07/17 when he was assigned to K.C.R.C.T Hospital . He was wounded in the forehead by GSW 26/10/18. He was Taken Off Strength (TOS) 28/05/19 for return to Canada.
One year later, Private Brennan was again transferred to Bushey Park, London, and a year later, to Moore Barracks Hospital. In November 1917, he crossed to France, attached to the 13th. Canadian Field Ambulance Corps. He remained with that unit until he was sent to England May 1919. Embarked for Canada on S.S. Empress of Britain May 26th, 1919.
Frank was discharged from the CAMC at No.1 Depot, London, ON. 6/06/1919 due to demobilization.
After the war he moved to Detroit. Met and married Gertrude (nee Eiseman), they married in July 1924 and had eight children. The family lived in Highland Park and St.Helen’s, also in Michigan where he sold real estate.
Frank passed away in February 1977.
