While crossing Canada by train to take part in the Siberian Expeditionary Force, Gerald fell ill and was admitted to the Isolation Hospital at Strathcona 21/1/18. At that time, he had a ‘dry cough’ and it rose concerns that he might have TD (Tuberculosis) or the Spanish flu. His temperature on 26/10/18 was close to normal and one day later he had a temperature of 102F. He was later sent to the Edmonton Military Hospital, admitted there 19/10/18 then diagnosed as Influenza (pneumonia).
Gerald DOD 10/11/1918, age 22 years, at Edmonton, Alberta.
He died one day before the end of the Great War in Europe. It is likely that he contracted Spanish flu while training in Alberta, but this is not confirmed. His body was returned to his parents for burial in Wallaceburg at Riverview Cemetery, Wallaceburg.
